PPR episode 202 After the Up Rising with John Duffy and Ray Nowosielski

[YouTube version available soon]

After a long absence, I am back with a brand new episode for my listeners. I was joined by journalists John Duffy and Ray Nowosielski. We discussed their new podcast series “After the Uprising: The Death of Danyé Dion Jones,” which takes on the mysterious death of Danyé, a young black activist, who was found hanging from a tree outside of his home in St Louis, Missouri. Danyé’s death was ruled a suicide by St Louis county. However, his mother Melissa McKinnies, a prominent activist in Missouri, believed that this was a lynching connected to her activist work. We discussed the circumstances surrounding the death, touching on many suspicious aspects that were overlooked by the police and the coroner’s office. We discussed key evidence that was overlooked, such as two DNA samples found on the noose. We also explored the circumstances leading up to Danyé’s death. We talked about the targeting of other black activists by the local police. We also touched on the lead detective on the case and issues of internalized racism within the police. We finished off the conversation by discussing the true crime genre and its serious blind spots when it comes to the murder of non-white individuals.

Open Minds On Air: Undue Influence in Pop-Culture Star Trek

From OpenMindsFoundation.org

In this month’s episode, Pearse is joined by Spike Robinson to launch a new series, “Undue Influence in Pop Culture,” where they plan to examine various popular movies, television series and books through the lens of undue influence and coercive control. This month, they compare and contrast two episodes of classic Star Trek: “Return of the Archons” and “A Taste of Armageddon.”

“Return of the Archons” is a classic example of how Hollywood portrays thought control or “brainwashing”, with a population of blissed-out automatons, only breaking out of tranquility for their purge-like Festival – a society completely under the control of a supercomputer, which was programmed six thousand years ago by the “savior” of their race, Landru. The people are glassy eyed and speaking in a strange, stylized sort of language, with no autonomy or independent thought.

However, it is in “Taste of Armageddon” that the real face of cultural coercion can be seen – for two planets fighting a mechanized, computer-calculated war, their cultures have become so tightly controlled that otherwise sane, rational people – people who talk normally and even persuasively about their “system” are so under the influence of their leaders that they will “willingly” step into vaporization booths, rather than face the indoctrinated phobia of what might happen to their world if they do not comply.

Using these two episodes as a starting point, Spike and Pearse discuss what mind control is, what it isn’t, and how our popular culture informs our opinions on this highly complex subject.

Porkins Policy Radio ep. 157 The Chris Benoit Files w/ Keelan Balderson and US Destabilization in Nicaragua w/ Daniel Kovalik

Return guest Keelan Balderson of WideShut.co.uk was my guest in the first hour. We discussed his recently remastered documentary “The Chris Benoit Files.” The film explores the brutal murder/suicide of WWE star Chris Benoit, his wife Nancy, and seven year old son Daniel Benoit. Keelan breaks down the three day long crime which ended with Chris Benoit’s suicide. Keelan attempted to dispel many of the popular conspiracy theories as we attempted to understand how such an extreme and horrific act could be committed. We also touched on WWE’s official response, the media firestorm over so called “roid rage.” We also discusses how Benoit’s repeated head injuries resulted in Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, a degenerative disease which probably played a significant role in his unspeakable acts.

In the second hour University of Pittsburgh Law professor Daniel Kovalik joined me to discuss the current political situation in Nicaragua. We talked about the history of U.S. interference in the Central American nation from the 1950s to early 1990s. Daniel talked about the United States’ repeated efforts to destabilize and unseat the Sandinista government of Daniel Ortega. We explored the root causes of the recent protest movement, much of which stems from proposed social welfare reforms. Daniel talked about the violence that has taken place in Managua and other cities, and how this has been distorted in Western media. Later we talked about the failed assassination attempt of Venezuelan President Maduro, right-wing resistance to an independent leftist Latin America, and Trump’s plans for the region.

Open Minds On Air episode 5 Brainwashing and Cult Apologists

From OpenMindsFoundation.org

In this episode, Jon Atack and Pearse Redmond speak with their good friend Yuval Laor. They start by discussing a recent article by professor Rebecca Moore entitled The Brainwashing Myth, dissecting the strange assertions Moore makes, primarily that brainwashing does not exist. They also talk about her three “scientific, neutral, and precise” terms which can replace brainwashing.

Jon and Yuval talk about the historical roots of the term from ancient China to the through reform camps of the 50’s. They also address our problems with the flawed term “new religious movement”, discussing Moore’s history defending Jim Jones and The Peoples’ Temple. They talk about her sisters, Carolyn Layton and Annie Moore, both high-ranking members who organized and oversaw the murder of over 900 people. They look at how this has colored Rebecca Moore’s books defending Jones and the legacy of the Peoples Temple. They close out by talking about the problem of arguing over semantics within the counter-cult world.

What do you think about this podcast? Do you agree? Do you have a story about brainwashing – or the misuse of the term – that you’d like to share? We’d love to hear from you!

Porkins Policy Radio episode 146 Chuck Ochelli on Singapore Summit, Genocide in Yemen, and more

This week Chuck Ochelli joins me to discuss geopolitics and the problems of the world. We start off discussing the recent Singapore Summit between North Korea and the US. Chuck and I both offer our opinions and analysis of the “deal” that is being hammered out by Trump. We talk about the realities of what is actually being presented, and discuss the larger context of what this may mean for the Korean Peninsula.

In the second hour Chuck and I branch off and talk about Jeff Sessions reversal of a court ruling granting asylum to immigrants fleeing domestic violence and violence from non-state actors. We also talk about the genocide in Yemen, which could see 10 million people starve to death. Chuck and I close out the show by talking about the lack of morality and respect for human life that many here in America seem to have.
