PPR episode 202 After the Up Rising with John Duffy and Ray Nowosielski

[YouTube version available soon]

After a long absence, I am back with a brand new episode for my listeners. I was joined by journalists John Duffy and Ray Nowosielski. We discussed their new podcast series “After the Uprising: The Death of Danyé Dion Jones,” which takes on the mysterious death of Danyé, a young black activist, who was found hanging from a tree outside of his home in St Louis, Missouri. Danyé’s death was ruled a suicide by St Louis county. However, his mother Melissa McKinnies, a prominent activist in Missouri, believed that this was a lynching connected to her activist work. We discussed the circumstances surrounding the death, touching on many suspicious aspects that were overlooked by the police and the coroner’s office. We discussed key evidence that was overlooked, such as two DNA samples found on the noose. We also explored the circumstances leading up to Danyé’s death. We talked about the targeting of other black activists by the local police. We also touched on the lead detective on the case and issues of internalized racism within the police. We finished off the conversation by discussing the true crime genre and its serious blind spots when it comes to the murder of non-white individuals.

Patrick touches on how Kavanaugh built his career out of the Vince Foster case. We also discussed the idea that this investigation did more to protect the Clinton’s than go after them. We wrap up by discussing the legacy of the Foster case and why it continues to be a third rail which no one goes near.

Open Minds On Air episode 5 Brainwashing and Cult Apologists

From OpenMindsFoundation.org

In this episode, Jon Atack and Pearse Redmond speak with their good friend Yuval Laor. They start by discussing a recent article by professor Rebecca Moore entitled The Brainwashing Myth, dissecting the strange assertions Moore makes, primarily that brainwashing does not exist. They also talk about her three “scientific, neutral, and precise” terms which can replace brainwashing.

Jon and Yuval talk about the historical roots of the term from ancient China to the through reform camps of the 50’s. They also address our problems with the flawed term “new religious movement”, discussing Moore’s history defending Jim Jones and The Peoples’ Temple. They talk about her sisters, Carolyn Layton and Annie Moore, both high-ranking members who organized and oversaw the murder of over 900 people. They look at how this has colored Rebecca Moore’s books defending Jones and the legacy of the Peoples Temple. They close out by talking about the problem of arguing over semantics within the counter-cult world.

What do you think about this podcast? Do you agree? Do you have a story about brainwashing – or the misuse of the term – that you’d like to share? We’d love to hear from you!

Porkins Policy Radio episode 106 Post Charlottesville with Chuck Ochelli

Chuck Ochelli joins me to discuss the aftermath of the violence in Charlottesville and the rise of right wing racist groups. We begin by breaking down the initial protest over the taking down of a statue Robert E Lee. Chuck and I offer up our thoughts not only on America’s new found love of statues from the 1950’s but the make up of this crowd of alt-right protesters. Next Chuck and I explore the racist and racialist history of America and its deep roots in our society. Chuck explains the difference and how racialism has infected most of the population. We talk about the casual racism that persists in America and how it has morphed into the extreme forms that we are seeing at the moment.

In the second hour we discuss self proclaimed white nationalist Chris Cantwell and his bizarre saga which ended with him crying on YouTube. I talk about his strange trajectory from sweaty, unfunny libertarian “stand-up”, to neo-nazi skinhead “activist”. Chuck and I explore how a man as insignificant as Cantwell gravitates to a racist ideology. We then touch on how the alt-media has slowly been infiltrated and co-opted by these right-wing fascist groups. We also look back historically to the 1990’s when the FBI and other groups began infiltrating and radicalizing the Patriot and Militia movements. Chuck and I debate whether the government may be preparing us for another major act of right-wing domestic terrorism by looking at the bizarre case of Jerry Drake Varnell in Oklahoma City. I also touch on Johnny Bangerter, his history as a spokesperson for the White Power Movement, and the efforts by the government to involve him in the OKC Bombing. Chuck and I try to end on a positive note by offering up our own thoughts on how to combat this problem and grow as a nation.

ClandesTime 101 Nightcrawler

From SpyCulture:

Nightcrawler is one of those rare films that is beautifully written, very well executed and is about something that actual matters. It tells the story of Lou Bloom, a young man in poverty-struck Los Angeles who gets into nightcrawling – filming violent crimes and accidents and selling the footage to TV news. In this episode Pearse and I conduct an extensive analysis and review of the film, exploring many different interpretations that often contradict each other. Is Lou a sociopath, or the product of economic circumstances and a media culture that turns violence into a fetish? Are his cohorts Rick (his assistant) and Nina (the director of the news channel) just as guilty and complicit in what happens? Is his rival nightcrawler Joe Loder actually worse than Lou? These and many more questions are explored in this epic discussion.
