Porkins Policy Radio episode 85 The Truth Shall Make You Free with Aaron Franz

Good friend Aaron Franz joins me on the show this week to discuss our recent work in The American Journal of Economics and Sociology. We begin by talking about some of the behind the scenes aspects of the issue. I talk about the whole process of how the issue came into being from the initial offer from Clifford Cobb, getting all the writers together, and dealing with all the road bumps along the way. Aaron and I talk about the actual writing process and the challenges involved in writing for an academic journal. Next we explore Aaron’s piece which deals with secret societies, CIA, occult practices, and the ways in which this is mimicked in Hollywood films. We talk about the similarities between secret societies and the CIA, particularly with their strong reliance on cryptography. Aaron and I discuss the famous Kryptos sculpture outside CIA headquarters and the agencies use of art’s powerful occult properties. We also talk about the bizarre Fallen Angel sculpture in CIA headquarters.

In the second hour we talk about the notion of truth as it now exists today. We begin by talking about the biblical verse “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” which is carved into the lobby wall of the CIA’s Original Headquarters Building. We talk about the significance and deeper meaning behind not only the quote but why CIA Director Allen Dulles insisted that it be inscribed. Later Aaron and I move onto the current environment that we find ourselves in right now. We talk about the way truth has become an almost meaningless notion in today’s political and media landscape and what this means for us as a society. Aaron and I also discuss the hidden truths behind the various statements and missteps of Donald Trump. We talk about the possible occult meanings behind this as well as the notion that a magick spell was cast on America after the election.

The CIA and Hollywood episode 10 Confessions of a Dangerous Mind

Aaron Franz joins us to discuss the 2002 biopic Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, which tells the story of game show producer and host Chuck Barris. Barris claims that while becoming a TV star he was recruited by and worked for the CIA as an assassin, killing a total of 33 people. In this episode we analyse this claim, which has been dismissed by the Agency as a ludicrous fantasy. We examine Barris’ true life history, focusing in on his marriage to Lyn Levy – the daughter of one of the founders of CBS – and his incredibly selfish relationship with their daughter Della. None of this appears in the film so taking this into account we consider whether Barris was a CIA assassin, a psychopathic fabricator or an emotionally warped narcissist (or all of these things rolled into one). If Barris truly was a CIA agent then what was his job? Was he an assassin, or did they employ him to ‘slay the audience’ by developing the prototypes for reality TV?

Confessions of a Dangerous Mind is also notable for being George Clooney’s directorial debut, and a production that languished in development hell for years before he became involved and began pulling strings to ensure the film got made. We consider whether the movie was one of Clooney’s attempts to gain the attention and approval of the CIA, and whether he too thought that Barris’ TV career was the real mission for the Agency. We examine Clooney’s self-appointed role as Chuck’s ‘defence lawyer’, his obsession with goats and why he employed theatrical visual tricks throughout the production. We round off comparing Confessions of a Dangerous Mind to The Recruit, as both films show The Farm (the CIA’s semi-secret agent training facility) and portray the protagonist being inducted and initiated into that covert world.

Pearse Redmond returns to the show to tell us about Newsbud. Sibel Edmonds and others are trying to start a new large-scale online news source that will be completely funded by individual people, and not big foundations, corporations or government. If and when Newsbud is up and running Pearse will be a senior producer working full time to bring you more of the kind of material that he now creates at Boiling Frogs Post and Porkins Policy Review. Newsbud is now raising start up money via a Kickstarter campaign.

Porkins Policy Radio ep. 28 California Cults with Aaron Franz

From Scientology to the Peoples Temple, the state of California is awash in prominent and powerful cults.  Our good friend Aaron Franz joins us to discuss this bizarre phenomenon.  We discuss several high-profile cults in the state and how they have influenced the people and culture of California.  Aaron and I break down Scientology and explore how a cult whose membership is made up mostly of high profile celebrities has become a powerful culture creator within society.   Aaron explains how groups such as The Process Church and The Summit Lighthouse use occult teachings within their cult when indoctrinating their members.  We also discuss how this is really the corruption of the occult for nefarious purposes.  Aaron and I also go into Jim Jones and The Peoples’ Temple, discussing how one cult leader was able to change the face of politics in San Fransisco.  We end by talking about yoga and veganism, and how both of these fads are also not only misunderstood, but are being used in a negative way.  This was an especially fun episode to record and is also filled with quite a bit of humor.

NOTE: My apologies for the audio issues through out the episode.  We had some internet connection problems.
