Today we are joined by private investigator Pat McKenna and legendary attorney F Lee Bailey for a discussion of OJ and the criminal justice system. We begin by discussing some of the recent media reports about OJ that have come out in the tabloid press. The three of us address these bogus claims that OJ was thrown out of the Cosmopolitanism hotel in Las Vegas. Lee also tells us about his background in the Marine Corp and how he became one of the most famous trial lawyers. We then move onto some new research by Brian Heiss looking at a forgery in Nicole Simpson’s dairy. We discuss how Fred Goldman helped lobby California’s legislature to allow the diary and the forgery into the civil trial. Lee gives us his legal perspective about the civil trial and the ways in which it was conducted. He talks about the numerous instances in which false information was introduced as evidence, and how this has convinced many that the civil trial was the “good trial.” We explore how the media treated the criminal jury and how this influenced the civil juries verdict. Later Lee and Pat discuss the criminal trial itself. Lee talks about his cross examination of Mark Fuhrman. He talks about the moment he knew he had caught Fuhrman in his own web of lies. Pat and Lee also touch on how Judge Ito wouldn’t allow several witnesses who were willing to testify that Fuhrman was a virulent racist.

Later Pat and Lee discuss the school they have founded for teaching investigative skills. Lee talks about the need for teaching trial lawyers how to turn facts into evidence, and how many lawyers are not fully equipped to carry out investigations. Pat talks about a similar problem facing private investigator’s and what he will be teaching. We also talk about the role that Hollywood has played in crafting our understanding of criminal justice. Lee talks about the problem that show’s like CSI have had on the criminal justice system. We round out the show by talking about some of the problems with forensic evidence. JP and I touch on the the ways in which the US media (particularly TV) has become ever more enamored with the cult of celebrity. We discuss the ways in which the TV talking heads will obsess over a single tweet by Trump while actual real news is happening all around us. JP and I speculate over the reasons for this trend, and why the media loves to distract us with “news items” about presidential tweets. We also touch on the lighting speed with which the news cycle now runs at. Later JP and I talk about the decline of US dominance globally and how this may explain why we are seeing so many violent conflicts erupting across the globe. JP focuses on the numerous crises in the Middle East, and how they are being exploited in order to stave of the eventual death of both the US and Saudi Arabia.
I begin the second hour by briefly touching on the arrest and escape of former Georgian President JP Saakashvili. I then turn my attention to the recent murder of former president of Yemen Ali Abduallah Saleh. I give a brief look at the recent history of modern Yemen and how it has continually been used by regional and world powers. I also talk about the Arab Spring which ousted Saleh and his return to power in 2015 with the Houthi movement. I then explore the Houthi’s and attempt to explain some of the complexities surrounding their political movement. The issue of Iranian support for them is also explored. I finish off by discussing my displeasure with some of the political rhetoric from left which appears to be supporting war against Saudi Arabia. I talk about the problems with choosing sides in any war and Yemen in particular. I also talk about how this still fits into the US/Saudi narrative of their being a “good” and “bad” side in this war.

In the second hour I talk about the massive release of documents from the Abbottabad raid back that killed Osama bin Laden. I explain a bit of the history behind the release and the role that the Foundation for Defense of Democracies played. I discuss the initial takeaways that have been reported in the media almost exclusively through FDD and the Long War Journal. I also break down my analysis of the relationship between Iran and Al Qaeda, which has become a major focus of the story. I then raise and attempt to answer several questions I have about the documents in question and the questions over the raid itself and the true history and role of Bin Laden. I talk about the notion that Osama bin Laden was already dead and trove of files is simply a media stunt. I question the ability to gather up 470,000 documents, files, video, audio, etc in the short amount of time that the Navy Seals had. This issue of no internet access and phone lines within the Abbottabad compound is also looked at. Later I explore the ludicrous notion that Bin Laden was running day to day global Al Qaeda operations through letters hand delivered by courier. I finish off by wondering if bin Laden was in fact alive but under house arrest and completely out of the loop. I discuss the idea that he was killed in Pakistan solely for PR purposes. I also talk about where his wives are and why no one has attempted to contact them.
Tom Secker and I finish off our trilogy of episodes discussing House of Cards. This month we look at the last season The Final Cut. We discuss Francis’ long political career as it begins it’s twilight phase. Tom and I talk at length about the Cyprus story-line which introduces foreign policy to the show for the first time. Jon discusses his disillusionment with Scientology in the 1980’s and the process by which he left the group. Jon also speaks about the the abuse he faced after leaving and the lengths Scientology went to after he published Let’s Sell These People a Piece of Blue Sky. We then move onto Jon’s book and focus on the monumental achievement that it represents in terms of laying out the true history of both L Ron Hubbard and Scientology. Jon and I explore who Hubbard truly was. I ask Jon why history has whitewashed much of Hubbard’s legacy in recent years. We discuss what motivated Hubbard to create Dianetics and form Scientology. Jon talks about Hubbard’s massive drug use and the role that played in his life throughout running the cult. Jon also touches on the theory that Hubbard suffered from temporal lobe epilepsy. We explore Hubbard’s use of children within the cult and also explore the allegations of child abuse by Hubbard. We finish the conversation by talking about Jon’s current work with the Open Minds Foundation. Jon talks about their mission and the work that they are doing in exposing cults, undue influence, manipulation, and brainwashing. Jon talks about how gangs, terrorists, pedophiles, sex traffickers, and many other nefarious groups all employ theses tactics in order to control those around them. We also talk about how we as individuals are under constant attack from those wishing to exert undue influence and ways to combat it.
Today I am joined by old friend Pearse Redmond to review and discuss the Netflix TV series American Vandal, a mockumentary that satirises the true crime genre. Pete Maldonado is a student at a high school in California who starts making a documentary about a fellow student, Dylan Maxwell, who was expelled for graffitti-ing dicks on 27 teachers cars. He soon finds that Dylan is probably innocent, and he and his co-producer Sam set out to find the true culprits and figure out what is really going on. In our discussion Pearse and I get into some of our favourite moments and characters, the style which shifts throughout the series from comedy to drama, the lessons for amateur detectives and the role of social media. We also touch on why true crime is popular and ask whether it merely provides a vicarious thrill or whether it inspires people to become hobby investigators.
